Dog mushing swing dogs(point dog) and wheel dog question?
what do musher look for in finding a good swing dog and wheel dog and would the sex of the dog matter. just Curious
I’ve seen dogs of either gender in these positions. Swing dogs need to be fast and obedient as they back up the lead dog, wheel dogs need to be strong and dependable (pulling steadily, not jerkily). Beyond that, it depends a lot on the size of the team and their function: is this a working freight or transportation team? A long-, mid-, or shirt-distance racing team? A tourist ride giving team?
An experienced musher has their own preferences and often breeds their own dogs in order to produce exactly what they like to have in a team. If you’re just starting out, the best way to go is to get a retired lead dog and a couple of their retired team mates and start learning the ropes from dogs who know what they are doing.
