Puppy Play Pen vs crate?

We have a small puppy (3 months old and 3 lbs). When we are out of the house during the day would it be better to put him in a large dog kennel (wire kind for large dogs 36″L X 24″W X 26.5″H) or put him in a play yard play pen thing. The kind that is about 8 panels, 24″ (wide) x 30″(High) There is also the option of connecting the wire crate to the play pen. We want him to have room but feel safe and be safe.

Invest in a small crate. It is so worth the peace of mind. You won’t be worried that he’ll choke or get caught in the puppy play pen. Three months is really young. the rule of thumb is one hour in the crate for every month old. The play pen is fine when you are at home and at night, but that crate will be his ‘den’ and it gives him a nice safety zone. Dogs will not go potty if they have to lay in the mess, so it is also a very handy potty training element. Just make sure he gets right out side when you let him out. Don’t leave toys and chewies in the crate when you are away..it can be a choking hazard for a small puppy. If you cannot make it home every three hours, I guess I would go with the big wire cage for now and make sure his blankets are far from wee pads.
