Can we teach our 1 yr and 2 mos old baby girl ABC’s and Counting Numbers simultaneously?
or what should we teach her first?
ALPHABETS, and/or NUMBERS?
do you think at her age, she can grasp all of these?
Singing number and alphabet songs are a great way to teach her. However, be careful not to just ‘teach’ her parrot fashion, simply resiting a song doesn’t really mean she understands what each letter or number is. Make sure you count things throughout the day and point at numbers. Ask her to fetch two bananas whilst shopping or count the apples with her. A great way to test her knowledge is to ask her what number you are pointing to to see if she recognises it. Try doing the randomly rather than in numerical order ( although I doubt she will answer for a good few months yet!) The same thing with the alphabet. Reading is great for this, but also point out words whilst out and about and sing lots of varied nursery rhymes.
Don’t worry too much about her learning these skills too soon. It’s more important for her to have fun and enjoy a variety of games to become a well rounded individual. And when she makes mistakes, don’t worry or fuss about it too much – she is still very young.
My son is 25 months and counts 1,2, 4, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 18, 19, 20 at the moment yet regognises all the numbers to 20 when I point to them. He also only recognises a handful of letters and forgets most of the alphabet song, but can keep the tune! They are all different, so don’t compare too much.
