For years now, gay pride parades have been a regular scene in cities such as New York, San Francisco, Rio de Janeiro and other commonly gay friendly cities. But with the ever-growing gay rights movement, gay pride parades are popping up far and wide, even in more straight cities and countries. Although it’s great to support your local gay pride parade, many gays and lesbians have been traveling to exiting new places in order to experience what different gay pride parades have to offer. With so many to choose from, it’s difficult to make your mind up where to go first. Here’s a list of some of the top gay pride parades in the world.
New York City Gay Pride Parade – New York City has always been the center of the gay rights movement and the gay pride parade is no different. The city is filled with a chock-full week of activities ranging from rallies to parades, parties and festivals. Widely known as the city that never sleeps, New York gay pride week is all about continuous celebration throughout the week.
San Francisco Gay Pride Parade – An equally vital location for modern gay rights movement, San Francisco is one of the most gay friendly cities in U.S. Although the parade route isn’t as extensive as it is in large cities like New York, what they lack in distance they make up for in festivities with a variety of stages boasting all sorts of entertainments from homo hip hop to biker dykes.
Atlanta Gay Pride – Often people miss out Atlanta as a hub of gay activity, but this city down south certainly isn’t to be missed.
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras – Do not be surprise that one of the biggest scale celebration is found in this part of the world, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras actually lasts for three-four weeks. Travelling thousand of miles down south may seems overly far for most, but a month-long gay pride festival is positively worth the trip.
Sao Paolo, Brazil – It seems that every city is boasting that they have the largest gay pride parade, this is one of the only event that attacts over three million celebrants in their gay pride parade. It’s a mardi gras, carnival, and gay pride parade all wrapped up in hot South American flavor.
Amsterdam Gay Pride – This is truly a spectacle that is not to be missed. While most gay pride parades take place in the streets of a bustling city, after a weekend of marching through the streets with music and costumes, the Amsterdam gay pride parade moves out of the streets and onto the river, with parade goers sailing down the Prinsengract river in hundreds of vibrantly decorated boats. Nearly half a million spectators gather each year to take part in the merriment.
Toronto Gay Pride Parade – Toronto is one of the most diverse cities in the world, and their three-day long gay pride celebration is no exception. There are street fairs, pride marches, music and lavish costumes, not to mention an assortment of family pride events. There is truly something for everyone to enjoy.
